SPAR Group celebrated their 60th anniversary with a ‘Good Mileage’ initiative, enlisting Brent Lindeque to deliver a special edition Hyundai i20 to SPCA.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (13 July 2023) – This year, as part of their 60th-anniversary celebration, the SPAR Group introduced a unique initiative called ‘Good Mileage’, in which South Africans were invited to vote for a charity of their choice to win a Special Edition Hyundai i20 in the SPAR Win-A-Car competition.

The goal was to make a difference while honouring SPAR’s six decades of service in the country.

Having already positively impacted countless lives over the past 20 years, the SPAR Win-A-Car competition took on an even greater significance with the addition of a car to be donated to a deserving charity. SPAR shoppers were given the chance to win one of the 60 cars being given away, and the public was also invited to vote for their favourite charity to receive the Special Edition Hyundai i20.

Helen Barrett, National Advertising and Promotions Manager for The SPAR Group expressed the company’s commitment to customer appreciation and caring for communities.

“Charities aligned with the SPAR brand play a vital role in creating positive change within their local communities,” she explained. “We wanted to stay true to our culture of caring by collaborating with charities we already support through other SPAR initiatives and provide them with a platform for greater awareness.”

Four charities—Cancervive in Johannesburg, Hero Burn in Pretoria, the national SPCA, and Southern Lodestar in KwaZulu-Natal—were chosen as potential beneficiaries, and the public enthusiastically cast over 1 million votes for their preferred charity.

In recognition of the charities’ dedicated efforts, SPAR presented each of the four finalists with a cheque for R10,000 and essential SPAR products to support their causes. Ultimately, the SPCA emerged as the winner of the Special Edition Hyundai i20 car.

To personally deliver the car, SPAR enlisted the help of Brent Lindeque, the founder of ‘The Good Things Guy’. Lindeque embarked on the SPAR ‘Good Mileage’ road trip from Durban to Alberton, visiting each of the four charities along the way.

The car itself was equipped with advanced safety features, including a Matrix vehicle tracking device, two wireless Beame recovery devices, and a MiX Vision dashcam, further enhancing its safety capabilities for the SPCA.

“At SPAR, we are committed to serving the community, bringing smiles, and promoting positive change,” said Barrett. “Our ‘Good Mileage’ initiative, as an extension of a platform that previously only rewarded customers, along with our visits to the four incredible charities, reflects this. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our customers, retailers, and partners for their unending support, which has enabled us to continue making a meaningful impact 60 years later.”

Through initiatives like ‘Good Mileage’, SPAR Group continues to demonstrate its unwavering dedication to uplifting communities and spreading joy, proving that their commitment to making a positive difference remains as strong as ever.
