In exciting news for the sailing community, South African waters are set to play host to the 2025 Mirror World Championships that’ll see the offshore of Durban abuzz with a fleet of competition!
Durban, South Africa (29 January 2025) — The local sailing community is popping champagne in abundance thanks to the news that South African waters are set to play host to the 2025 Mirror World Championships!
The Mirror Championships offer an exciting splash of competition that South Africa can’t wait to host once again. This year will mark the third time SA has enjoyed hosting in the last century; 2007 saw Port Elizabeth host the fleets, while in 2015, Theeswater Sports Club facilitated the inland chapter.
South Africans have also had their moments in the sun aboard the boat. In the Mirror Worlds held in Ireland in July 2023, five teams from South Africa competed, with the duo of Howard Leoto and Lisa Madlewa from Cape Town finishing fifth overall.
Not to mention, local brother and sister duo Michaela and Ryan Robinson have twice won the Mirror Worlds, the first time at Lough Derg Yacht Club in Ireland in 2013 and then on their home waters in 2015!
This year, sailors will unite offshore in Durban for the championships hosted by the Point Yacht Club from April 14 to 19.
“We are extremely excited with the announcement,” shared Commodore for Point Yacht Club Robin Hulley.
“We have recently hosted the Laser Nationals with over 50 boats on the water. Two years ago we had two dozen world class teams compete in the J22 Worlds. As so many sailors know, offshore of Durban is one of the best sailing locations in the world.
“We are honoured that the International Mirror Class of South Africa entrusted us with the event and we look forward to welcoming a large fleet to our shores in April 2025.”
Entries are already open for the event, with details available via the regatta website http://mirrorworlds25.co.za. Non-Mirror owners are encouraged to charter boats and join in the action!
