2,800km later, and Andru Van Zyl has turned every gruelling kilometre into a gift of hope and over R615,000 for families navigating the brave fight against childhood cancer.
Cape Town, South Africa (23 January 2026) – At the beginning of his festive season holiday, Andru Van Zyl didn’t go out jolling to celebrate completing matric; he grabbed his dad’s mountain bike and set out on a bold mission to cycle from his home in Polokwane all the way to Cape Town as a powerful act of compassion in support of children and teenagers supported by CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa.
Yesterday, Andru received a hero’s welcome in the Mother City, bringing a heartwarming end to a gruelling 2,800km solo trip for a cause far greater than himself.
Inspired by witnessing a close friend undergo cancer treatment, Andru chose movement, commitment and purpose as a way to stand alongside families navigating childhood cancer.
Along the way, he was supported by communities, fellow cyclists, and local businesses, reflecting the shared spirit that connects The Cows and CHOC.

His goal was to raise R300,000, but he has more than doubled it. Through this extraordinary journey, The Cows confirm that more than R615,000 has been raised! This will go a long way in helping CHOC continue providing practical, emotional and educational support to families during treatment.
The completion of this heartfelt mission is not just the end of a ride, but the impact of a young person who chose empathy, action and hope, and inspired so many to do the same.
“Thank you for carrying hope forward, one kilometre at a time,” The Cows said.
You did it, Andru – proving that one person’s determination can provide a lifetime of hope and practical support for families facing their toughest fights.
