Little Layla is a testament to the sentiment that ‘dynamite comes in small packages’! At only 11 years old, she has already earned herself the opportunity to represent South Africa overseas:

Johannesburg, South Africa (28 May 2024) — Layla Hichens Gogo has only just turned 11 years old, but she’s already earned herself the opportunity of a lifetime.

As any wise person will caution you, dynamite often comes in small packages, and this is certainly the case for the budding martial artist.

A champion on her come-up in karate, the Redhill Primary School learner earned not only gold and South African colours for her skills, but also the opportunity to join the South African squad who are competing in the JKA World Championships in Tokyo later this year, as her school proudly shares.

“This is an outstanding accomplishment at any age, but especially remarkable for someone who has only just turned 11!”, the school adds, in admitted awe of Layla’s grit and hard work.

Considering that karate is both a sport of mental and physical discipline, Layla is yet another young South African whose achievements remind us why being exposed to different sports can reveal legendary talents in the making.

Meanwhile, in news of other young karate champions-in-the-making, matric scholar Katlego Dlamini has been selected to take part in the 7th World Goju Karate Championship in Austria all while keeping up with her school work in a showcase of diligence that is itself a fantastic achievement.
