In partnership with Mama Flo, the Hammies Wild Dogs Rugby team raised awareness around period poverty. Breaking the silence.
South Africa (21 July 2025) – Standing tall in pink socks, Hammies Wild Dogs Rugby have reminded us that sport has the power to inspire and uplift both on and off the field. In the true spirit of Mandela Day, a social rugby club on the Atlantic Seaboard, Wild Dogs Rugby traded their usual socks for bright pink ones as a powerful reminder of support for a cause that often goes unspoken, period poverty.
Partnering with Mama Flo, an organisation working to end period poverty, the team used their platform to help break the silence and raise awareness about menstrual health.
Period poverty is a subject that is still covered with shame and stigma. It continues to affect thousands of girls and women across South Africa, often resulting in missed school days, emotional distress and poor hygiene. However, Wild Dogs Rugby took a stand, showing that rugby is not just about competitions. It is also a space for compassion and community.

Since 2020, Mama Flo has been providing both short and long-term sustainable solutions to period poverty. Their efforts include running informative workshops and distributing reusable pads, some of which can last up to five years.
By wearing pink socks during the match, the team did not just give it their all on the field, but they also stood in solidarity with those affected by period poverty.
While the match may have come and gone, the call to action remains. The conversation to break the stigma also remains.
Through their actions, the Hammies Wild Dogs have reminded us that sport can drive meaningful change.
