In a pool far from home, one South African lifeguard, Jessica Harcus, shines at the 2025 RLSS Commonwealth Lifesaving Championship.
Swansea, Wales (28 July 2025) – South Africa once again has a new name to celebrate on the international sporting stage, and that is Jessica Harcus. Representing the President’s Team at the 2025 RLSS Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships, Jessica made history as the only woman from the team to win individual gold.
Competing with focus and fearlessness against the waves at the RLSS Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships, Jessica, who trains at the Woodridge Surf Lifesaving Club, took home gold medals in both the 100m and 50m Manikin Carry. These are considered two of the most physically demanding events in competitive lifesaving. The two medals are a powerful reflection of her strength and mental grit under pressure.
Lifesaving sport may not always make big headlines, but it builds the kind of athletes who train to save lives. It demands physical fitness and a calm mind in high-stress situations. Skills that we can agree Jessica clearly has in abundance. Her win is a reminder that excellence in lifesaving is about more than just medals; it is about the commitment to protect, to serve, and to rise to the moment.

As the only female individual gold medalist from the President’s Team, Jessica’s achievement is not only personal, but national. She has made her club proud, her team proud, and her country proud. And perhaps most importantly, she has shown young girls across South Africa what is possible when you commit fully to your craft.
In a championship filled with fierce competition, Jessica Harcus stood out for her talent.
From the shores of Woodridge to the world stage, she has proven that South African lifesaving has world-class talent.
