The City of Johannesburg’s Nici Neal is flying the South African flag high at the 2018 Commonwealth Games while bringing in the medals.
It was a case of so close yet so far for our golden girl Nici Neal and her lawn bowls partner, Colleen Piketh, when they lost to Malaysia in the final of the Women’s Pairs Gold Medal Match.
Nicolene ‘Nici’ Neal (born 02 March 1970) is a South African international lawn bowler.
She was born in Roodepoort, South Africa and was selected as part of the South African team for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Queensland where she claimed two silver medals: in the Fours with Elma Davis, Johanna Snyman and Esme Kruger and the Pairs with Colleen Piketh.
The SA pair was pipped to the post 14-15 and had to settle for silver. This will add to their 2018 Commonwealth Games silver medal they won in the women’s fours lawn bowls with Esme Kruger, Johanna Snyman and Elma Davis.
They beat Scotland 18-10 on their way to the finals. This was before they deposed England 14-12 during a tightly fought quarterfinals match.
The Roodepoort-born Neal is an Assistant Director: Specialised Services at the Metro Centre. She started playing lawn bowls at the age of 25 and has previously won the South African national singles title in 2014 and 2016.
