Durban’s Oceans 8 Charity Swim is back, bringing together swimmers of all levels, schools, sponsors, and 14 local charities for a weekend of meaningful impact.
Durban, South Africa (23 February 2026) – The excitement is building as the Oceans 8 Charity Swim makes its much-anticipated return to Vetch’s Beach at the Durban Undersea Club on 23–25 May 2026. Swimmers, supporters, partners, and 14 beneficiary charities will come together for a weekend that promises ocean fun and friendly competition.
Oceans 8 was born out of a love for uniting people through swimming while raising funds for non-profits making a real difference in KZN. Since its inception, the event has raised over R3 million, directly supporting 23 charities and the communities they serve.
Event’s spokeperson Nicci Carvalho says at it’s about the magic that happens when a community comes together.
“Oceans 8 is about shared purpose and the belief that when we come together, we can strengthen the work already happening in our communities. It’s ordinary people doing something challenging, and creating lasting impact.”
The weekend caters to all levels of swimmers. From the 1 and 4 mile courses to the more demanding 8 and 16 mile swims, participants get to challenge themselves while raising money for causes close to their hearts. Schools play a key role too, with interschool teams earning community service hours and trophies in the 1 mile swim.

Durban’s mild winter conditions and the sheltered waters at Vetch’s Beach make the event rewarding and accessible, whether it’s a seasoned open-water athlete or a first-time ocean swimmer taking the plunge. Swimmers in the shorter distances support the event’s 10 invitational charities, while the 8 and 16 mile participants direct their fundraising toward one of Oceans 8’s four founding charities.
Volunteers remain the heart of the event, supported by local businesses, safety teams, and community partners. Various sponsors continue to help make the weekend possible.
Environmental responsibility is also a top priority. Oceans 8 minimises single-use plastics, uses recycled materials wherever possible, and works with partners who share its focus on protecting the coastline.
As the event grows in popularity, swimmers across South Africa are invited to join the movement, taking on personal challenges while contributing to a community committed to meaningful impact.
