South African rising star Rio Cruz follows up his national championship success with a commanding gold medal performance at the historic Karate One Youth League event on African soil.
Harare, Zimbabwe (31 March 2026) – Momentum is everything in sport, and right now, Rio Cruz has plenty of it. It’s been a standout week for South African karate, and rising talent Rio Cruz is right at the heart of it.
Fresh from securing a national title in KwaZulu-Natal, Cruz carried that momentum onto the international stage, delivering a gold medal performance at the Karate One Youth League in Harare.
The tournament itself marked a significant milestone, as it was the first time the prestigious youth competition, part of the World Karate Federation calendar, was hosted on African soil. And Zimbabwe was the country of choice. With over 200 athletes from 34 countries in attendance, the event highlighted the growing strength and reach of youth karate worldwide.

Competing in the Junior Kumite Male +76kg category, Cruz looked assured from the outset. Calm, focused, and in control, he worked his way through the different rounds with confidence to book his place in the final.
Waiting for him there was fellow South African Handré Dreyer, setting up an all-South African clash for gold. Cruz wasted no time asserting himself, dictating the tempo and executing with precision to secure a 9–3 victory and top the podium.
The timing of it all makes the achievement even more impressive. Backing up a national championship with an international gold medal in the same week underlines his form, consistency and mental strength.
With the Karate One Youth League set to continue across cities like Manila, Poreč, Guadalajara, and Venice, Cruz has firmly placed himself among the country’s most promising young athletes and one you might want to keep a close eye on as the season unfolds.
