An incredible athlete who studies at the University of Pretoria has set a new South African record for hurdles! Meet one of the top 10 fastest hurdlers in the world:
Switzerland (07 July, 2023) — At just 21 years old, South Africa’s Marione Fourie is one of the fastest female hurdlers in the world. Showing off her skill and speed in Switzerland recently, the athlete and Sports Science student broke the 100m hurdle record for South Africa, blazing in at a time of 12.55 seconds and winning the meet.
Spotlighting a string of successes, Marione has been on a winning streak, shining at 10 out of 11 hurdles races during the recent season. Her display at Resisprint follows other accolades she’s earned for South Africa’s nightstand, including a bronze medal at the African Championships.
However, the Tuks student shared that her record-smashing was a surprise for her, despite her goal to pump the gas at the event.
“I could not believe what I had achieved. I was certainly not thinking about setting a record. I was only hoping for a breakthrough race. I am even more motivated now that it happened because the hard work and long hours pay off.”—Marione Fourie.
Now, the hurdles heroine is running with high knees toward the World Athletics Championships in Budapest come August.
Meanwhile, other South African sports stars are gearing up for another epic showcase of sport—the Youth Commonwealth Games. A team of 49 athletes and para-athletes have been announced with athletes between 14 and 18 ready to show the world that SA means business.
Marione is a Sponsored athlete with Nedbank Running Club National and a registered member of Nedbank Running Club Gauteng North.
