People working to move off the streets encountered a new friend who needed their help. Knowing the street cat’s struggle as their own, they provided the four-legged Capetonian with shelter and a new family.
Cape Town, South Africa (07 July, 2023) — A Cape Town street cat recently found a new family after a wonderful display of empathy was extended to the cat.
Over the past few weeks, the cat now affectionately called Kitty found a spot of comfort and refuge amid long days in the busy City at a CCID site. Somewhere people didn’t ignore the cat, but extended kindness to Kitty because they understood the street struggle better than anyone, having called the concrete jungle’s pavements home themselves.
See, the people who took Kitty in as one of them are members of a work-based rehabilitation project in the City — the Peer Fieldworker Programme (PFP). This team is made up of people who have been or are homeless but have a track record of maturity and commitment to bettering their lives and a mission to reintegrate back into society through work-based initiatives.
Some members have already settled down in homes, reconnected with their families and have now turned their efforts to helping others.
The Peer Fieldworker Programme is as much about helping others as it is helping oneself, and Kitty is proving to be an important part of the healing process!
Show You Care shares that team members now take turns caring for and feeding Kitty and have even built the cat a makeshift shelter.
“This experience has significantly boosted the participant’s self-confidence and has given them a sense of responsibility.”—Show You Care.
Kitty’s story is one of those that reminds us that homeless communities are more than statistics, but people who are just as capable of kindness and positive impact.
