Gerhard le Roux is gearing up for a powerful climb: the mighty Mount Aconcagua in South America, a summit for Streetscapes. Here, he’ll be carrying the torch of hope for the homeless, with each metre poised to raise awareness and support for Streetscapes!
Cape Town, South Africa (23 October 2024) — In a handful of months, Gerhard le Roux will find himself in South America, staring down one of the mightiest mountains—Aconcagua. Here, he’ll begin the climb he’s long been preparing for a summit for Streetscapes.
Homelessness is one of South Africa’s most pressing challenges. Not least because of the complex and multi-faceted circumstances that lead one to live on the streets but also because there isn’t exactly one singular yellow brick road out of that life.
But, if there were a path close enough to that yellow brick road, organisations like Streetscapes are paving it.
With Streetscapes’ programmes, participants aren’t identified simply by where they live; they’re clients who need to be offered a hand-up, not a hand-out.
Streetscapes works by providing work opportunities, community projects and a culture of connection to help break the barriers that keep people on the streets. With psychosocial support and shelter in tow, their approach is a holistic route to encouraging purpose, perseverance and a reminder of what life is like when one is part of society again.
Gerhard explains that the work Streetscapes does resonates with him deeply.
