Radio personality, Rozanne McKenzie, says staying active is less about motivation and more about building habits that actually last.

Johannesburg, South Africa (29 June 2026) – For many people, winter is the season when fitness routines quietly disappear. The cold mornings, shorter days and comfort of staying indoors can make even the most dedicated gym-goer think twice.

But Jacaranda FM presenter Rozanne McKenzie believes winter doesn’t have to derail your progress. Instead of relying on motivation, she says the key is creating routines that are easy to stick to.

“You don’t need to punish yourself or chase unrealistic goals. You just need to find something that works for you and commit to showing up.”

Here are some of her top tips for staying active this winter:

Stop chasing the “perfect body”

Rozanne encourages people to let go of unrealistic expectations and social media trends. Instead of exercising to look a certain way, she says it’s far more rewarding to focus on becoming healthier, stronger and more confident.

“There’s no such thing as a summer body. Every body is a body, and your body is your body.”

Choose movement you’ll actually enjoy

Not every workout has to happen in a gym. Whether it’s dancing, walking, CrossFit or another activity, Rozanne says the best exercise is the one you’ll want to keep doing. Finding a community of people with similar goals can also make staying consistent much easier.

“If you hate running, don’t run. If you love dancing, dance. If you enjoy walking with friends, do that. The most important thing is simply to move.”

Make exercise part of your routine

Treat your workout like any other important appointment. By setting aside dedicated time for it, you’re less likely to skip it when life gets busy or the weather turns cold.

Prepare before the day begins

A little planning can go a long way. Packing your gym bag or laying out your workout clothes the night before removes one more reason to stay in bed. Rozanne also says wearing activewear that makes you feel comfortable and confident can help put you in the right mindset.

Winter may test your motivation, but Rozanne believes lasting results come from consistency rather than perfection. Keep showing up!
