Woman Finds a Snail in Her Slaai

When Kirsty Weaver opened her pre-packaged salad, expecting to add it as a quick side to her braai, nothing could have prepared her for the side of “extra protein” it came with!

Johannesburg, South Africa (04 February 2026) – One woman’s recent salad purchase from a popular grocery store left her rather perplexed when she noticed an unexpected ingredient nestled among her greens.

It was while she was preparing to serve the pre-packed salad as a side for her braai that she noticed her purchase came with a complimentary live extra edition – a little snail.

Kirsty Weaver shared about the “shell-shocking experience” in a hilarious letter to Woolworths, and it’s left us quite amused.

“There I was, opening a bag of innocent-looking greens, when out popped a snail who looked me dead in the eye and announced (in what I can only assume was a thick French accent): ‘Bonjour madame. I am ze free escargot’,” Kirsty comically writes.

“It appears that in this case, Escargot was not an optional extra. It was very much alive, impressively slimy, and clearly enjoying the leafy luxury of its five-star accommodation — as evidenced by the multiple holes in the salad leaves.”

Kirsty emphasised that while she loves a culinary adventure, she did not pick a French salad option at the store, but definitely went for a bag of Watercress, Rocket and Baby Spinach.

“I would also like to place on record that I do NOT like escargot. Even when it is complimentary,” Kirsty teases.

“I also did not expect my dinner to still be on speaking terms with nature. The snail has since been safely relocated to my garden, where it is presumably telling its friends about the miraculous day it was rescued from its tomb of designer leaves.”

Unimpressed by the unforeseen addition to her salad, Kirsty said she was still recovering emotionally from making prolonged eye contact with her food and now has major trust issues with all salad bags. She asked for some reassurance that future purchases will remain strictly plant-based and entirely mollusc-free.

“So, dear Woolworths, while I do appreciate your commitment to “Fresh Produce” and “Farming for the Future” (excellent slogans, by the way), I must confess that I sincerely dislike discovering an unexpected crunch where no crunch should ever exist. Yours, slightly traumatised but wanting to remain loyal, Kirsty Weaver,” she signed off.

Her post has garnered several funny comments from amused social media users. While some couldn’t help expressing their second-hand trauma from Kirtsy’s snail salad ordeal, others shared that the shelled stowaway’s presence simply meant there were few pesticides used on the greens.

Whether it was a culinary catastrophe or a sign of superior soil, one thing is certain: it was definitely the “slowest” quick, healthy side that Kirsty would be quite happy to never encounter again.
