SA Rugby has extended Rassie Erasmus’ contract until 2031, keeping the double World Cup-winning coach at the heart of the Springboks’ journey as he continues to guide the team with the same consistency.
South Africa (09 December 2025) – South African rugby is doubling down on the formula that keeps delivering magic!
A few years ago, Rassie Erasmus walked back into the Springbok setup and immediately reshaped the team’s identity. Since then, South Africa has lifted two World Cups, reclaimed global dominance, and built a culture that resonates far beyond the field. And now that winning blueprint will stay in place for the long run.
SA Rugby has officially extended Rassie’s contract for another four years, keeping him with the Springboks until after the 2031 Rugby World Cup in the USA. SA Rugby confirmed the news at its general meeting, saying the move reaffirms the organisation’s belief in stability, long-term planning, and South Africa’s unique brand of rugby excellence.
SA Rugby President Mark Alexander did not hold back when confirming the news to the union’s general meeting.
“This decision reflects not only Rassie’s remarkable track record of success, but also the enduring impact he has made in shaping the identity of our game.”
Since taking over as Director of Rugby in 2018, Rassie has guided the Boks to extraordinary heights. World Cup victories in 2019 and 2023, back-to-back Rugby Championship titles, and three seasons finishing as the top-ranked team in the world.
The organisation added that Rassie has refined a uniquely South African style.
“He has instilled a culture of accountability, unity and belief, while safeguarding the traditions and values that make our game a source of national pride.”
Rassie himself welcomed the extension.

He also emphasised that while the future stretches all the way to 2031, the focus remains firmly on what’s next.
“Although this is a long-term agreement, we’re not looking beyond a really tough 2026 schedule right now.”
Announcements regarding the rest of the coaching team’s contract negotiations are still to come, but for SA Rugby, extending Rassie’s stay is not just about winning trophies; it’s about player development and a sustainable rugby ecosystem.
