Connor raises money to compete at the Level 3 Championships in East London, backed by community support, and delivers gold in the 200m and 400m freestyle.

Cape Town, South Africa (20 April 2026) – A young swimmer from Cape Town is proving that big goals sometimes start with a simple idea.

Connor, a dedicated member of the Cape Town Otters, had his sights set on competing at the Level 3 Swimming Championships in East London. He earned his place through hard work in the pool, but like many young athletes, getting there came with a financial hurdle.

Instead of stepping back, Connor and his mom got creative. This is where the idea of fundraising came from: selling homemade fudge with the help of a family friend.

Connor took full ownership of the mission, setting up stalls at local markets, sharing his story, and even adding his own twist by selling his Pokémon cards to boost the effort.

Cycling around his neighbourhood delivering orders, standing behind his table at markets, and juggling school with training, Connor built something that people wanted to be part of. Before long, the community responded in a big way.

Locals showed up to support “the fudge swimmer,” small businesses got involved, and word began to spread beyond Cape Town. Orders and messages of encouragement came in from across South Africa from people who had never met him but believed in what he was trying to achieve.

All the while, Connor stayed focused in the pool, continuing to train under Coach Lezelle alongside his teammates. This is a group he proudly calls his swim family.

By the time he stepped onto the blocks in East London, he wasn’t just representing his club, but he was carrying the support of an entire community. Connor claimed gold in both the 400m freestyle and 200m freestyle events, capping off a journey that was built on discipline, creativity, and a whole lot of backing from people who chose to get behind him.

He returned from East London with two gold medals in the 400m and 200m freestyle, but the bigger win was everything that got him there.
