Nkonzwenhle suffered multiple ear infections as a baby, leaving him severely hearing-impaired. Today, new support has opened his world to everyday sounds and a deeper sense of connection.

Himeville, South Africa (01 October 2026) – The sound of a morning alarm, the tune of a song we love, and the ability to engage in conversation are all part of our everyday lives and are things we don’t necessarily think twice about.

However, for a young man named Nkonzwenhle, persistent ear infections from when he was just a few months old resulted in him experiencing the world differently. With time, he became severely hearing impaired.

A resident of Himeville Location, he was recently introduced to Rowena Aldous during one of her many community service and engagement rounds in the area. After learning about his story and challenges, Rowena was able to get in touch with people who could help.

Sani Round Table 152, in conjunction with the Let’s Hear Foundation, came on board to begin the process of getting Nkonzwenhle hearing aids.

Sani Round Table 152 supports the needs of the Himeville community in various ways to drive impactful change, while the Foundation aims to assist people with hearing impediments in various ways. This includes fundraising for cochlear implants, fitting hearing aids, and providing helpful information to assist people not only in identifying hearing loss, but also in understanding how to live with and support those with hearing impediments.

“It has not been an easy journey,” says Rowena.

“It was months of doctor and audiologist appointments. Many thanks must be given to Dr Allan Howard for his time and expertise.”

Thanks to this collaborative effort, Nkonzwenhle had his final fitting this week and, for the first time, got to hear what the world really sounds like.

Shared images from the special moment captured his intrigue as he examined the small instrument, as well as his bright smile as, at 19 years old, he experienced the joy of hearing sound clearly.

With his new hearing aids, Nkonzwenhle can now experience the everyday sounds and connections he had long missed, opening his world to greater joy, confidence and possibility.
