More than 2,000 children will find a Hero story, activity, or colouring book when they open their Santa Shoebox this year, bringing them not just the excitement of Christmas, but the warm reminder that someone out there cared enough to light up their day.

South Africa (05 November 2026) – Let’s be honest, folks: being considered, knowing someone cared enough to do something that made your life a little easier, or having someone extend kindness to brighten your day is the BEST!

Every kind heart that contributes toward packing, filling or funding a Santa Shoebox spreads this goodness to thousands of children across and beyond South Africa.

Filled with all sorts of goodies, from stationery and toiletries to clothing and treats, these boxes not only make a practical difference to disadvantaged children, but they also bring the magic of Christmas and perhaps something more sentimental: knowing that someone out there considered their needs and cares about them.

Adding to the magic of this incredible initiative, Hero in my Hood has confirmed that more than 2,000 children will find a Hero story, activity, or colouring book when they open their box this year.

Hero in my Hood activity and story books are a popular and meaningful inclusion in Santa Shoeboxes across South Africa. The Project’s guidelines encourage donors to include an age-appropriate English book under the stationery/educational item category to foster reading literacy – making Hero in my Hood books the perfect choice, as they are specifically tailored for South African children.

At just R12 a book, Hero in my Hood is rallying the public to support the final stretch of their part of the initiative and help reach 3,000 children by sponsoring a book. When Santa Shoeboxes are delivered to the drop-off points (which are currently open), each box is checked, and extra goodies, like sponsored Hero books, are added.

“We will put a sticker with your name on the back of the books you have sponsored. We will be dropping off the books at Canal Walk today, so there is still time if you would like to share the love and sponsor some books for the Santa Shoebox Project.”

It only takes a minute or two to make a difference and make a child feel seen and considered. Leave a donation here.
