What began as an emergency search for a missing infant has become a moving reminder of the kindness that still exists in South Africa, thanks to a police officer who went far beyond her official duties.
Gqeberha, South Africa (11 June 2026) – A tiny baby boy, abandoned and alone in the cold, could easily have become another heartbreaking headline. Instead, thanks to the actions of caring police officers and one constable who refused to forget about him when her shift ended, his story has become one of hope and the very best of humanity.
Although Child Protection Week has officially come to an end, stories like this remind us that protecting children is a responsibility that extends far beyond a date on the calendar.
On the 2nd of June 2026, members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gelvandale responded to reports of a five-month-old baby who had allegedly been abandoned in bushes in the Windvogel area of Gqeberha. What followed was a desperate search to find the infant before it was too late. When officers eventually located him, they discovered he had reportedly been exposed to the elements for nearly 24 hours. Cold and severely dehydrated, the little boy was rushed to Dora Nginza Hospital, where medical staff immediately began treating him.
Child protection organisations estimate that around 3,500 babies are abandoned in the country every year, although experts believe the true number may be significantly higher due to underreporting. Behind every statistic is a child whose future depends on someone stepping in when it matters most.
For the officers involved, rescuing the infant was part of their duty. But for Constable Pereira, the story did not end when her shift did.
Unable to stop thinking about the baby whose life had hung in the balance, she returned to the hospital during her rest days. Accompanied by her husband, she spent time with the little boy and brought essential items to help with his care and comfort as he continued his recovery. A deeply human response to a child who had experienced more hardship in a few days than any child ever should.

Police officers are often recognised for fighting crime, making arrests and keeping communities safe. Those responsibilities remain at the heart of the profession but a story like this offers a glimpse into another side of policing… one rooted in empathy and kindness for the people they serve. The actions of the Gelvandale SAPS members helped save a life. Constable Pereira’s decision to return to the hospital added something equally meaningful: reassurance that this little boy was not facing his journey alone.
As news of the rescue spread, South Africans flooded social media with messages of support. Many marvelled at the baby’s survival after reportedly spending nearly 24 hours exposed to the elements, while others praised Constable Pereira for continuing to show care long after the rescue was over.
“Thank you for your unconditional love and care for the little one. May you be blessed abundantly,” wrote one commenter, while another simply said, “God bless you, Constable Pereira and husband, always there for the community.”
Headlines about policing are often dominated by allegations of misconduct, corruption and public distrust. Stories like this offer a different perspective. They remind us that while wrongdoing must always be exposed and addressed, there are also officers who serve their communities with compassion, integrity, kindness and care.
Thank you Constable Pereira, South Africa salutes you.
