As more communities struggle to survive and the livestock death toll rises, Gift of the Givers are sending more drought aid to communities in the Eastern and Northern Cape.
South Africa – On the third of October, Gift of the Givers sent a convoy of trucks stocked with water, to Graaff Reinet.
Parts of South Africa are still being devastated by drought. South Africa is a water-scarce country, and we should always be mindful that at any point, we could run out of water. Graaff Reinet has struggled for months with a lack of water.
The community are not alone in their struggles. Farmers across the Eastern and Northern Cape provinces have been left with no options as rainfall has yet to relieve the drought. Livestock has been lost due to starvation and dehydration. Without rains, there has been no regrowth of feeding areas.
Whenever there is a disaster, drought, fire or political hostage, Gift of the Givers is there to offer aid to those in need. Since founding 27 years ago, the organisation sends volunteers all over the world to assist however possible.
Their most recent involvement was to assist farmers in Strydenburg, Northern Cape and Graaff-Reinet, Eastern Cape. They also visited KwaZulu-Natal. The deliveries included fodder and other supplements that farmers are missing.
They even took some time to sit and discuss the drought crisis with the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Mcebisi Skwatsha. They debated what interventions need to be undertaken to support the South African population through future droughts.
