A viral clip from a game drive is reminding South Africans why nature deserves both admiration and respect after an elephant approached a broken-down game-viewing vehicle.
Hoedspruit, South Africa (14 June 2026) – South Africans love a good wildlife video but this one had many people watching through their fingers and holding their breath.
Footage of a curious elephant approaching a broken-down game-viewing vehicle has gone viral across social media, turning an unexpected close encounter into one of the most talked-about clips of the weekend.
The video, which started trending yesterday and has racked up hundreds of thousands of views, shows a group of wildlife enthusiasts in a nerve-wracking position when their game-viewing vehicle broke down just as a large elephant wandered into the area. At first, the elephant appears calm and curious, slowly making its way towards the vehicle before taking a much closer look at the “unexpected object” sitting in its path. The passengers, meanwhile, could do little more than hold on and hope the encounter remained exactly what it appeared to be: curiosity. It was all a little too close for comfort and the entire group had to abandon the vehicle.
The footage quickly spread across multiple social media platforms, with those involved sharing their own reactions to an experience they are unlikely to forget anytime soon.
Eugene Kruger posted, “We had a close call with a massive Elephant in the Kruger.”
Alex Williers, who somehow managed to keep filming throughout much of the ordeal, shared, “Thankfully, we were all okay, got some bruises and cuts when she knocked me over, what an experience, also how I kept filming while this went on, I don’t know! Then you get Arrie the Elephant wrestler.”
Arno Van Rooyen added, “Almost met my Maker 😱😱. Thankful to be Alive today.”

No one was seriously injured, the elephant eventually moved on, and the passengers were left with an experience that will undoubtedly be retold for years around dinner tables, campfires and braais.
