Thousands of runners will line up in Durban on Sunday for the 85.777km Up Run, with stories of resilience, purpose and endurance expected to take centre stage.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (09 June 2026) – Five days out from the 2026 Comrades Marathon, the energy is already building along the 85.777km stretch between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. This is where thousands of runners will soon take on what is known as the Ultimate Human Race.

On Sunday, 14 June, 21 633 participants will line up in Durban for the historic “Up Run”, facing a demanding climb of around 1.8km in elevation gain, a ticking 12-hour cut-off, and a route that has tested endurance, emotion and resilience for decades.

But beyond the numbers, the Comrades is once again set to be about something far bigger than finish times. It’s the stories.

The runners raising funds for communities. The athletes running in memory of loved ones. The first-timers chasing a personal promise.

In many ways, the race becomes a moving collection of human purpose. For supporters, the ritual is just as familiar. Some will be glued to screens in the early hours while others will be lining the roads, posters ready, waiting for that brief moment where encouragement can change everything.

The Comrades Marathon Association also highlighted the role of “buses” in a short feature video shared ahead of race day. These pacemakers help set a steady pace and guide others towards specific time goals, especially in the moments when fatigue starts to set in. real. For many participants, these groups become an important mental anchor on the road.
