A beautiful surfboard made from litter collected in Noordhoek is being made for auction, and the funds will be used to further rid the community of litter, poacher’s snares and invasive plants.

Noordhoek, South Africa (14 September 2022) – A bespoke surfboard made from beach litter, invasive trees and packaging is going on auction to support Project Noordhoeked. The event takes place on the 15th of October 2022, and there will be several items on auction that are ocean and conservation-related.

Project Noordhoeked is a non-profit community project, founded by Karoline Hanks, that creates jobs for a few people in the community. This small team keeps Noordhoek tidy, cleaning the streets and beaches of litter, clearing the local wetland of snares, clearing the environment of invasives and working on any projects that benefit the community as a whole.

The team manages Kakapo the wire whale, which facilitates regular and ongoing beach cleanups by the beach-going public. Project Noordhoeked hopes to create awareness about the effects of single-use plastic and lower its own personal waste footprint.

The auction event, which will take place in October, will be used to fund further projects and keep the team of guys employed for another year.

Cobus Joubert of Wawa Wooden Surfboards has been building one of his masterpieces, using ocean plastic that was picked up by people in Noordhoek and placed in the wire whale Kakapo. Karoline has also provided a few additions to the board, all collected from the Noordhoek area.

“I also dropped off a bag of chipped Port Jackson, which was removed from Noordhoek wetland. This is all going into the surfboard core…

He is making incredible progress, and we will very soon have a beautiful wooden board which we will add as one of our items to be auctioned….which will aid us in keeping our little community-funded project afloat (to continue keeping the beaches and roads trash free, and also ridding the wetland of port Jackson – as well as snares!)” – Karoline Hanks

The fundraiser auction evening will be hosted at Café Roux, with Nik Rabinowitz as MC and auctioneer. You can find out more about the event via the Project Noordhoeked page here.
