No life is too small to save, especially for real-life heroes like Ethan.
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (05 August 2026) – It’s been quite the eventful week for feathered friends, with heroes at every corner.
Just as officers in Cape Town helped an Egyptian goose family to safety from a peak-hour traffic jam, another bird found itself in need of a helping hand in Durbs too. This time, it was a tiny chick, a curious cat and a young man named Ethan.
After finding the chick in the cat’s grasp and unsure where it had come from, Ethan knew for certain that it needed help. So he scooped up the little bird and headed straight to the Kloof and Highway SPCA.
By the time night fell, the chick was safe from danger under a warm heat lamp with a full tummy and the care it needed to recover. All in a day’s work.
Sharing the story on social media, the SPCA thanked Ethan for acting so quickly.
“Every small act of kindness can make a world of difference.
This afternoon, Ethan arrived at our SPCA carrying a tiny chick he had just rescued from a cat. Unsure where the little one had come from, he knew it deserved a chance and brought it straight to us.
Tonight, our newest little patient is warm under a heat lamp, has a full tummy, and is safe.
A huge thank you to Ethan for showing that no life is too small to matter. Your compassion has given this little chick a second chance.”
Every year, SPCAs and wildlife rehabilitators across SA care for countless injured and orphaned birds, especially during breeding season when curious chicks often find themselves in vulnerable situations. While it’s tempting to try to care for wild birds at home, getting them to experienced wildlife rehabilitators as quickly as possible often gives them the best chance of survival.
Bravo to Ethan for saving this little chick and giving it a second chance!
