What was the very first CD you ever bought yourself or were gifted? How did you store your CDs? So many questions after 40 years of music!
Global (17 August 2022) – Music continues to evolve as the years go by. Music has always been a part of life, as it brings joy, comfort and support to many. Growing up as millennials, CDs were a big part of our music experience. We grew up in the age of cool album covers, walkmans and of course, who can forget deluxe CD boxes?
These days, most people will have a preferred music app where they can keep their entire music collection in the palm of their hands. We don’t judge; we have those apps too! But we do love to look back at CDs and how they shaped our love of music. In fact, we all have that one box somewhere filled with CDs we couldn’t bear to part with.
Who remembers spending hours in Musica, browsing CDs and going over to the listening station to make sure you really love it before forking out your hard-earned pocket money, or if you were an adult at the time, your hard-earned salary?
The Grammys reckon that the CD will make a come-back. According to the music awards team, sales of CDs have been growing as people are starting to see them as collectables. The best part is, it’s actually Gen-Z boosting all the sales. (Not sure what Gen-Z is, we shared a generational breakdown going all the way back to the boomers here)
“CD sales rose for the first time in almost two decades, driving over $580 million in revenue for the music industry. While that pales in comparison to the $12.3 billion earned from streaming, the figure is still significant.” – Adam Aziz, The Grammys.
It isn’t only CDs rising in sales; vinyl and cassette tapes have also seen a rise in sales since 2021. While streaming is super convenient, there is nothing like putting on your favourite CD and dancing (or crying) the whole way through.
Seeing as the CD has turned 40 this year, we wanted to know a few things about your CD collection. Which was your very first CD? Did you have a CD rack or one of those CD books? What was your favourite CD of all time? Let us know in the comment section.
