If you were wondering who left the freezer door open, mother nature did! It has been threatening to snow for the last few days now and finally, it has.
Lesotho (21 September 2022) – It has been threatening to snow for the last day or so as temperatures dropped and now today, a day before we officially celebrate the coming of Spring, parts of South Africa and neighbouring Lesotho got a dusting of snow.
The South African weather service did issue a few weather warnings indicating high rainfall with a chance of snow in the high-lying areas. We absolutely welcome this weather because every drop of rain makes a difference somewhere.
“An orange level 5 warning for disruptive snow resulting in dangerous driving conditions and communities being inaccessible is expected over the extreme north-eastern parts (southern Drakensberg region) of the Eastern Cape.”
Vox Weather has been sharing some stunning pictures of the snow that has been coming through Lesotho and the surrounding parts of South Africa’s borders in the Southern Drakensberg and Barkley Pass.

The Semonkong Lodge in Lesotho sent out a few snaps of the snowfall they have had in the last 24 hours. They shared with us that it’s been snowing non-stop since 6 pm last night.
“Snow started to fall around at around 6pm last night in Semonkong and this morning we have been treated with snow covered scenes concealing the lodge and the surrounding area beneath a white blanket of snow.
Around 14cm of snow has fallen so far and continues to come down this morning.”
As it continues into today, the snow will keep building up so keep an eye on social media to see all those stunning pictures.
