An artist asked AI what different countries would look like as queens, and South Africa got our own leading lady.
Global (30 March, 2023) — AI (Artificial Intelligence) is a hot topic right now across the world, changing everything from how we learn to what we can create.
We’ve seen countries as villains and heroes through the eyes of AI. The latest run? Countries as queens! Recently, an artist working with AI, @bestiaanimalis, took to TikTok to share what queens of the world look like according to the tech.
As AI grows more fast and furiously across fields, ‘Asking AI’ to create pieces of art has become a huge internet trend, and we’re always in anticipation.
Countries around the world were featured, including Indonesia, Russia, Japan, Iran and France, to name a few. The video has since received almost 5 million views.
As if it were a mini United Nations gathering, many ‘countries’ had a lot to say. And some countries (Australia) had a few slightly ruffled feathers going by the comments (Queen Auzzie does just look like Queen Elizabeth holding a crocodile).
But, the Queen of South Africa showcased a brave women with an eerily realistic expression…
Other queens at the virtual ball:
Of Queen SA, one user shared “this is the first time I’ve ever seen SA”. Other commenters rooted for our country and applauded the AI’s art.
We love almost everything about the depiction, but what could use some improvement is an important lesson for anyone using AI.
Because AI creates art based on reference images, often these creations can be slightly touch-and-go. Our gorgeous flag didn’t get the showcasing it deserved and instead the AI pulled images that could be seen as an inverted play on the British flag.
Given our history, the flag of the rainbow nation is a powerful symbol to so many of us. But, an AI doesn’t necessarily know this, and won’t always factor in things like socio-political importance. That’s why it’s so important for people working with AI to always double-check its output— no matter how advanced the tech dudes tell you ChatGP4 has become.
Still, we love a strong queen, even if she’s just a digital painting that needs a new outfit. What would you add to ‘Queen South Africa’?
