Karen Zoid was joined by guitarists Ben Francis and Henry Steel Jr. in writing a song dedicated to loadshedding and it’s getting pretty popular!
South Africa (25 October 2022) – On the 8th of October, Karen Zoid shared a song called “They cut the power” on her TikTok and Instagram pages as a joke about being on tour during loadshedding. The songstress is usually known for her rocking power ballads but this one takes the top prize!
On tour with guitarists Ben Francis and Henry Steel Jr. they came up with a song to keep busy during yet another wave of loadshedding. Now they are performing it at shows to the fans’ absolute delight.
While the song was shared two weeks ago, it keeps growing in popularity and Karen Zoid has even been asked to perform it during her interviews with various radio stations.
Several South African artists have done spoof songs about loadshedding. The Kiffness released an Eminem spoof “Guess who’s back” in 2019.
Karen often uses songwriting to discuss South African issues. In 2020, Karen joined fellow musicians including Lira, DRB singer Madjozi, Kahn Morbee from the Parlotones, Arno Carstens, Early B, Jack Parow, Francois van Coke, Loyiso Bala and Zolani from Freshlyground, to discourage people from panic buying. The song was written by Ard Matthews and produced by Theo Crous.
She has always been open about music, her life and what she is feeling. We love that she turned her loadshedding frustration into something fun we can all enjoy.
Take a look at the loadshedding song below.
