A little more hope for the future was restored after thousands of children voted for their favourite word of 2024. While the adults’ word of the year was ‘brainrot’, ‘kindness’ took the cake as the Oxford Children’s choice!
Global (10 February 2025) — In wholesome news that’s given us all a little more hope for the future, ‘kindness’ has triumphed as Oxford Children’s Word of the Year for 2024!
Considering that ‘brainrot’ is the Oxford Word of the Year per the adults’ segment, perhaps it would serve us all well to take a little inspiration from young people.
‘Kindness’ was chosen over numerous contenders, as voted for by over 6,000 children aged 6 to 14.
Per Oxford University Press, teachers participating in the research noted an increased awareness among children of how acts of kindness contribute to mental health, particularly in challenging times.
The survey also revealed that children’s focus on kindness is often influenced by their exposure to what’s happening in the world as well as in their personal environments. To this point, many youngsters cited the role of kindness in addressing the visible and hidden struggles others face, suggesting that the younger generation is empathetic and attuned to the needs of others, even in the rapidly challenging world they’re growing up in.
“This study has been a useful entry point for understanding the importance of humanity among such young minds,” shares Linda Roos, Dictionary Publisher at Oxford University Press South Africa.
“As adults, we should never underestimate children’s ability to think deeply, their yearning for peace, and their relentless hope for positive change. Where communities treasure mutual support, kindness becomes a bridge towards unity and meaningful connections.”
‘Artificial Intelligence’ earned the second top spot, while in the slang category, ‘slay’ reigned supreme (much to the joy of millennials everywhere.
Turning to the future with the two top words in mind, Linda adds:
“While AI presents exciting opportunities for education, healthcare, and economic growth, it also raises important questions about access and equity. By nurturing kindness alongside technological curiosity, we can help children approach these challenges with heart and intellect.
“As parents, educators, and community leaders, it is our responsibility to model and encourage kindness. Small actions can make a significant difference, whether it’s creating safe spaces for children to express themselves, celebrating acts of kindness in schools, or integrating social-emotional learning into the curriculum.”
