It’s May the 4th, which is a reminder that Yoda is not very fond of seagulls…
Global (4 May 2018) – Today is not a regular day. Today is Star Wars Day! Well, unofficially it is. Fans of the franchise adopted May 4 as the day to celebrate all things Star Wars simply because May the Fourth sounds a lot like “May the force be with you.”
And one of the best ways to celebrate Star Wars Day is to watch “SEAGULLS! (Stop It Now): A Bad Lip Reading for May the Fourth!”
The song and video was created by Bad Lip Reading (abbreviated as BLR) is a YouTube channel, run by an anonymous individual in the music production business, that spoofs clips from films, TV shows, songs, sports, and political news stories by overdubbing humorous vocal work that matches the lip movements of the targets. Rolling Stone described the channel as “the breakout hit” of the 2012 United States presidential cycle. And as of January 2018, the Bad Lip Reading YouTube channel had amassed over 6.5 million subscribers and over 942 million views across its videos.
The Empire Strikes Back BLR video which was released in November 2016 (and eventually hitting #1 on the Billboard Comedy Digital Tracks chart) features a scene of Yoda singing to Luke about an unfortunate encounter with a seagull on the beach. As of 2018, the “Seagulls!” video is Bad Lip Reading’s second most-viewed YouTube upload, and most popular musical production. It’s also racked up 61 million views.
In the song, Yoda sings to Luke Skywalker about the dangers posed by vicious seagulls if one dares to go to the beach.
Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films, publicly praised “Seagulls!” (and Bad Lip Reading in general) while speaking at Star Wars Celebration in 2017: “I love them, and I showed Carrie [Fisher] the Yoda one… we were dying. I showed it to her in her trailer. She loved it. I retweeted it… and [BLR] contacted me and said ‘Do you want to do Bad Lip Reading?’ And I said, ‘I’d love to…’”.
Hamill and Bad Lip Reading would go on to collaborate on Bad Lip Reading’s version of The Force Awakens, with Hamill providing the voice of Han Solo.
