As we count down the days until the latest edition of the Shrek saga comes to cinemas, here’s something fun in the world of everyone’s favourite ogre to get excited about. Shrek the Musical not only exists but is coming to Durban!

Durban, South Africa (28 April 2025) — If you’re anything like us and still love anything Shrek-related (no, a child didn’t write this), then your ears might perk up like Donkey’s to know that not only is there such a thing as ‘Shrek the Musical’, but also that it’s set to hit the stage in Durban.

The timing couldn’t be better considering that the world is (albeit patiently) gearing up to be treated to a healthy dose of tales from the swamp thanks to the upcoming Shrek 5, which is pencilled to hit cinemas next year.

Set to be put on by the Young Performers Project—a non-profit company that has been transforming lives through musical theatre for over two decades—‘Shrek the Musical’ is now officially on at Danville’s new Milkwood Theatre located in Durban North.

The Young Performers Project have been hard at work in rehearsals to bring everyone’s favourite ogre ‘fairytale’ to life, packed with all the comedy, great costumes and, of course, toe-tapping numbers.

The gang’s all together for this one, from Donkey to Lord Farquaad in all his short-man syndrome glory.

You can catch the production at the Milkwood Theatre until 4 May!

Meanwhile, in other wholesome news from characters we loved in our childhoods, South Africa’s favourite fuzzy friends (Takalani Sesame) just bagged a global win, and an extra-special one at that! Takalani Sesame has won the People’s Voice Webby Award for ‘Zikwe and the Triplets Bond Through Play’! Read more here.
