Recycling for Animal Welfare continues to collect glass in exchange for funds to pay vet bills and it recently added more drop-off points to its list.
Johannesburg, South Africa (17 March 2022) – Recycling is a great way to earn an income in South Africa. Many informal recyclers rely on the trade to feed themselves. Not only them, but charities also use recycling as a means to cover costs. There are hundreds of local charities that use recycling and we are celebrating them.
The 18th of March is Global Recycling Day and to honour the day, we are taking a look at some awesome recycling initiatives in South Africa. Today, we take a look at Recycling for Animal Welfare.
Informal recyclers make good money by collecting and recycling glass. This idea was adopted by Judy Croukamp Knox as a way to raise funds for charity without having to ask anyone for money; they just needed peoples’ glass.
The charity was started in 2016 but officially became a registered charity, Recycling for Animal Welfare (R4AW) in 2017. To date, they have collected hundreds of tonnes of glass which have been turned into funding for the treatment of animals in their care or for families that cannot afford to cover vet bills.
They first started by collecting other people’s glass but as their project kicked off, they realised it was far too much for them to take on alone. They reached out to a glass recycling company and requested assistance. The Glass Recycling Company dropped off a skip which was used to fill up with glass.
RAW has since established drop-off points for people to donate their glass within Gauteng’s East Rand area. You can take a look at the full list in the image below.
