Who needs a broomstick when you’ve got a bakkie?
Johannesburg, South Africa (09 September 2025) – Imagine the craziness that would ensue if South Africa were the home of the Harry Potter universe. That’s exactly what Joburg actor and influencer Ally Damon did, in a viral video that has clocked more than 250,000 views on Instagram.
When you South African-nise (yes, that’s a word now) things that are already great in the world, you get pure gold. Green and gold. Green and gold that makes you laugh. It’s a knack we have, being so funny. We’ve even ranked for it, placing 19th amongst the world’s funniest nations this year.
Back to if Harry Potter were South African…
In Damon’s funny reimagining, he compares dark arts classes to long queues at home affairs, blames load shedding on not being able to boil potions (sorry Professor Snape), and swaps owls for hadedas and brooms for bakkies. Then there was the Voldemort sighting in Limpopo, and bribing exam invigilators with biltong. That tipped us over the edge.
Oh, and then the comments.
“Not to mention, parents drive down to drop their kids off. The Hogwarts Express isn’t operational because they’ve stolen the railway tracks,” jokes Naazim.
“Would taxis be a bigger brooms with 15 kids on it?” asked Mark.
