Small paws, big hearts, and a life-changing day: 51 animals in Herbertsdale recently received their very first taste of veterinary care, proving that no community is too remote for a little compassion.

Herbertsdale, South Africa (15 April 2026) – Ideally, where we live should never determine the level of vital care or essential services we receive. But sadly, in reality, it so often does.

Just 50 km from Mossel Bay is the farming community of Herbertsdale. where the land is green, the air feels different, and the people welcome you with open hearts. Yet, beneath Herbertsdale’s natural charm, there is a pressing need.

When the dedicated team from Project Blessing – Animal and Community Care carried out their very first vaccination campaign here, they discovered that less than 1% of the township’s pets had been sterilised.

“In that moment, we knew – we had to be part of changing that.”

Last Sunday, that vision came to life. With the support of Dancers LOVE Dogs, along with Dr Roos and Dr Melanie, the animal welfare organisation held a sterilisation drive that made a meaningful difference.

At the end of the day, 51 dogs were sterilised, and for a community like Herbertsdale, this is not just a number – it’s a real turning point.

Two dogs were found in poor condition. The owners were educated and warned, and Project Blessing will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Every single animal also went home vaccinated, dewormed and supported by Project Blessing. Eighty per cent of the sterilisations were sponsored by Dancers Loves Dogs, and the remaining 20% was covered by Project Blessing.

The animal welfare charity extended its heartfelt thanks to:

  • PDSA George, who travelled all the way to assist with vaccinations and deworming.
  • The incredible veterinary nurse and Animal Health Technician for standing with us.
  • Lizette Plato, Bree-ann Forsyth, and Lorraine de Beer for their groundwork within the community.
  • Herbertsdale Laerskool for opening its doors to the use of its facilities
  • Sentiara by Salome Bruyns for handling intake, tagging, sending animals home with food, assisting with collections, and ensuring each animal made it safely back home

Everyone was phenomenal and worked together like a well-oiled machine to improve the lives of a community’s animals that had gone without proper care for far too long.

Project Blessing is determined to continue this life-changing work, one animal and one community at a time.

“Please continue to support our work so we can make more of these sterilisation marathons possible. Every bit of support helps us reach another community, another animal, another chance at a better life,” the charity appeals.
