Johannesburg Skate Club is empowering kids from Soweto and Alexandra through skateboarding, offering a safe space to grow.
Johannesburg, South Africa (28 July 2025) – If you have ever seen a skateboarder in full flight on the rails, catching air, or simply carving down the street, you will know there is something thrilling about the sport. Some will call it a bit dangerous, but there is no denying the thrill. At Johannesburg Skate Club, they are sharing that thrill with over 50 amazing kids from Soweto and Alexandra, two vibrant yet underserved communities in Joburg.
However, this is more than just skateboarding. For these kids, skating offers a powerful escape from daily hardships. It gives them purpose, a sense of belonging, and a reason to dream big. The skate park is more than just a playground, but a second home, a classroom, and a stepping stone for a brighter future.
They aren’t just talented, but clever, too. One skater was spotted using a banana peel to wax the rail. Who needs fancy skate wax anyway?

There is a catch: while these young skaters have the heart and talent, most of them struggle to access competitions and events across the city, even nationally. Safe transport is a major hurdle. Taxis are often unreliable, and hiring transport costs between R800 and R1000 just for a small group.
Despite the challenges, they continue to show up. The Johannesburg Skate Club cooks meals when possible, and the local community lends a hand whenever it can. The truth still remains, they are stretched thin.
They are currently building more than ramps and rails. Creating a space where young people can grow, learn, and thrive. A space where dreams can take shape, but they are unable to do it alone. That is why the club is raising funds to buy a reliable van that will allow them to safely transport the skaters to the places where they can shine, competitions, skateparks, and events they have never been able to experience before.
