A new initiative by the South African National Parks is transforming the future for young people in rural communities by introducing them to the world of nature conservation through interactive courses and activities.
Matsulu, South Africa (05 August 2025) – Bright futures in rural South Africa can only take root and flourish when the right tools, programmes and opportunities are brought into these underserved areas and young people are inspired to dream beyond the challenging circumstances stacked against them.
Through the South African National Parks’ new Junior Honorary Rangers National Project, recently introduced in Matsulu in Mpumalanga, youth are being inspired to learn and explore more about their vast natural surroundings and become stewards of the environment.
“The gates are open, and we are grateful and blessed,” the enthusiastic junior rangers sang at the project launch at Skukuza in the Kruger National Park on Saturday, 26 July.
Thirty Grade 8 students, an equal number of boys and girls from eight different high schools, were welcomed to the project, which aims to give children guidance for the future by educating them about conservation and introducing them to various career opportunities within National Parks.
They were introduced to interactive activities and courses, which aim to instil a love for and knowledge of nature and conservation, support SANParks and develop a succession plan for the SANParks Honorary Rangers.
Beyond fostering an appreciation for nature, the project also provides career guidance, introducing these young participants to various opportunities within the National Parks.
Shining as a new beacon of hope in Matsulu, with the hope to expand in more regions, the project is showing young people that they can play a vital role in preserving South Africa’s natural future and beauty.
