The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra is putting on a charity concert this weekend in Robertson in aid of the Eseltjierus Donkey Sanctuary.

Robertson, South Africa (06 October 2023) – Excitement is building in the Breede River Valley in anticipation of a rare musical event. For the first time ever, the popular Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra will perform in Robertson, at the Oos-Kerk on Sunday 8 October, at 15h00.

To add to the significance of this event, the sparkling music program is presented in aid of Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary in McGregor. Eseltjiesrus offers a permanent safe haven for donkeys that have been rescued from dire circumstances, have been abused or are now simply ‘pensioners’.

The concert is also held to emphasize music’s role in bringing people together. Organiser Johan van Zijl talks more about the option to also buy tickets for others:

“By sponsoring any number of tickets, younger and older people can share the privilege of enjoying great music, which might not be possible for them otherwise. Public support for the sponsorship of tickets for old age homes, choirs, youth homes and music students will be highly appreciated by everyone”.

The orchestra consists of 55 talented musicians from all cultural groups and offers a program of entertaining musical items which is appropriately called “Music for everyone.” The Principal Clarinettist in the orchestra, Féroll-Jon Davids, is originally from Robertson. After completing his matric at Robertson High School, Davids attended Stellenbosch University and obtained a B.Mus. and later an M.Mus. degree in Clarinet Performance. He honed his musical skills through an exchange programme in Georgia and Montana in the USA. He is passionate about music education and is actively involved in Jamestown Sounds, a community project in the Cape Metropole. He lectures in clarinet at Stellenbosch University.

Tickets (R150 for adults and R75 for students) will go fast and are already available at Tourism offices in Robertson, Montagu and McGregor. In Worcester, the point of sale is Durban Street Animal Clinic. Alternatively, tickets can be easily obtained online by contacting adopt@donkeysanctuary.co.za by email. For any inquiries call 023 625 1593.

What does Eseltjiesrus do?

Eseltjiesrus, just outside McGregor, was registered as a welfare organization 16 years ago and all its activities and finances are monitored by its competent Board.

The Sanctuary offers a permanent home and expert, loving care for donkeys in need, whether retired, neglected or abused. Here they can enjoy their last years with donkey company, no stress, shelter, adequate feed and care until their death with dignity.

Eseltjiesrus also helps donkeys beyond their fences by offering educational opportunities for donkey owners, carers and animal welfare workers. There is also a helpline available daily on 023 625 1593.

Visitors are welcome from Thursdays to Sundays between 10h00 and 16h00.
