June is the month that blood donors are honoured for their gift to others; the Western Cape Blood Service is honouring donors by hosting some fun events.
Cape Town, South Africa (01 June 2022) – During June, the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) celebrates National Blood Donor Month. During this month, WCBS endeavours to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation and celebrate the remarkable act of saving lives through blood donation.
This year, they celebrate this remarkable month under the theme, “Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives”. The theme highlights the need for regular, unpaid blood donations all year round to maintain adequate blood supplies. The organisation has numerous exciting events planned for the month and will be kicking off by hosting blood grouping exhibitions at various malls over the first 3 Saturdays of this month.

“On World Blood Donor Day, 14 June, we will celebrate at our Head Office in Pinelands, by hosting a special blood donation clinic in the Auditorium. We encourage everyone to wear red on the day to show their support. We continue the month’s celebration with blood donation activations with various partners, where together we encourage the Western Cape to save lives.”
“We end the month on a high note by hosting our “1 day – 10 malls – 1000 units of blood” campaign again. This event will happen on Saturday, 25 June, at 10 participating malls across the Western Cape. Our aim is to collect 1000 units of blood to help us secure a sufficient blood supply, as we struggle with collections during winter months.”
“We would like to encourage all eligible and potential blood donors to stand together, celebrate National Blood Donor month, and save up to 3 lives with 1 donation”, says Marike Gevers, Public Relations Manager of WCBS.
Each blood donor will receive a pair of cosy warm socks for their donation this month.
If you are between the ages of 16 and 75, weigh 50kg or more, are in good general health, and lead a safe sexual lifestyle, you should be able to donate. Visit www.wcbs.org.za for more information. For those looking for information from other provinces, you can find out more from SANBS here.
