Charity Begins With Me is challenging the traditional Valentine’s Day romantic playbook, suggesting its supporters swap flowers for fruits to help nourish some children in informal settlements.
Johannesburg, South Africa (05 February 2025) – Roses, chocolates, dinner at 7 pm and a special gift if you’re fancy too – this is the dreamy backdrop we’ve come to associate Valentine’s Day with. And if you’re a sucker for love and romance, you’re probably already planning how to spend the special day with the one who makes your heart melt or beat a little faster.
But what if we told you could show and share your love a little differently this year?
We’re not saying to cut out the romance entirely, but what if perhaps, with that money to buy some flowers, you contributed towards some fruits instead?
This unique gesture could help a few little boys and girls feel the warmth of your love through a donation that nourishes their growing bodies.
Charity Begins With Me (CBWM) is encouraging its supporters, and anyone else in a position to spread a little love and kindness, to consider celebrating the highly anticipated “day of love” by supporting its mission to distribute 40,000 pieces of fruit and vegetables to children living in inform settlements in 2025.
“Let’s be very honest, in this heat your Valentine’s Day flowers won’t last long. So why not ask your husband, wife, boyfriend, crush, or even your BFF to rather donate fruit instead?” CBWM’s founder Stephan encourages.
“The price of a decent bunch of flowers is pretty much the same as seven boxes of bananas.”
So, while flowers are pretty, fruits can have an even greater impact on children in need. It’s different and uniquely meaningful.
If this is a cause that tugs at your heart, you can send Stephan a grocery delivery on Valentine’s Day or arrange to drop off some fruits in Fairland, Johannesburg on the day.
