Thanks to the vigilance and quick thinking of two NSRI crew members, a 10-year-old girl struggling in the shallow surf at St Lucia Beach was saved just in time, and a family got to go home whole this past Saturday.

St Lucia, South Africa (21 July 2026) – What was supposed to be a quiet Saturday afternoon at St Lucia’s Main Beach took a sudden turn when an off-duty NSRI crew member and his brother, a former crewman, spotted a 10-year-old girl struggling in the shallow surf. The moment they noticed her in distress at 1:50 pm, they jumped into action and immediately raised the alarm.

“Our rescue swimmers headed straight to the scene, while the rest of the duty crew rushed to the Station 40 base to launch a rescue vehicle and craft,” said Melinda Snyman, NSRI St Lucia Station Commander.

Acting quickly, the two brothers reached the young girl and brought her safely back to shore. Though she was unconscious when pulled from the water, she gratefully regained consciousness on the beach.

Snyman said the responding crew shortly arrived on the scene, provided medical treatment to stabilise the child, and she was transported to hospital by her local family members. She is expected to make a full recovery.

“It is suspected that the child may have experienced a medical condition, losing consciousness, while swimming in shallow water,” Snyman explained.

The swift actions of the NSRI St Lucia volunteer and his brother, which contributed to the child’s life being saved, as well as the swift response of the St Lucia duty crew,  are commended.

Moments like these highlight not just the bravery of our local rescue crews, but the vital role of constant vigilance near the water. We are immensely relieved and thankful for a happy ending, and we extend our deepest gratitude to everyone involved in bringing this little one safely home.
