After facing resource challenges, a men’s shelter has reopened with the help of volunteers and donations, continuing its work to support residents with daily needs and opportunities.

Johannesburg, South Africa (10 April 2026) – A men’s shelter supported by One Small Act of Kindness is once again open, welcoming back residents and volunteers after a challenging period, and the sense of renewal is already being felt.

The reopening was marked by a warm, shared meal, with volunteers stepping in to prepare and serve food while reconnecting with familiar faces and meeting new arrivals. The atmosphere, filled with energy and gratitude, reflected more than just a return to routine. A fresh start for many of the men currently staying at the shelter.

Beyond providing meals, the organisation continues to play a hands-on role in helping residents rebuild their lives. At present, several individuals are being assisted with securing identification documents, while others are receiving support in putting together CVs to improve their chances of finding employment. Community members with time and skills to assist with typing and admin are encouraged to get involved.

Recent contributions have also helped improve living conditions. Newly donated lockers have added a sense of dignity and structure, transforming the space into something that feels more like a home than just temporary accommodation.

This progress comes just weeks after the organisation highlighted the shelter’s urgent needs. At the time, consistent food supply, basic resources, and infrastructure challenges. Feeding the residents requires significant quantities of staples each week, from rice and pap to vegetables, proteins, and porridge, all of which rely heavily on public support.

Despite these challenges, the shelter has remained a place of growth and shared responsibility. Residents have taken pride in maintaining the space, working together on daily tasks and even planting flowers to brighten their surroundings.

There is still a strong need for ongoing support. Donations of groceries, toiletries, and time continue to play a vital role in keeping the shelter running and supporting the men on their journey forward. Items currently needed include facecloths, toothpaste, toothbrushes, Vaseline, and Sunlight green bar soap, with a target of at least 30 of each.
