Kristen Miller, other artists and students of Action in Autism joined forces in the most beautiful way to upgrade Whale Bone Pier with a mosaic makeover!

Umhlanga, South Africa (27 June 2024) — Umhlanga’s Whale Bone Pier has gotten a mosaic makeover thanks to author and creative Kirsten Miller and the many hands that helped bring the project to life!

Kirsten’s mosaic magic saw her team up with artists from Phansi Museum, graduates and students from Action in Autism’s Shahumna Centre, as well as many other volunteers willing to help out on the mission to beautify the famed walkway even further.

The project, which began last year in November as part of a big upgrade by the eThekwini Municipality, took many hours, navigating hectic coastal weather and a lot of creativity to dazzle the way it does today. But, the legacy left behind lives in each mosaic masterpiece (and there are many) that now has a forever-spot in one of Umhlanga’s most loved places.

From multiple whale wonders to odes to other ocean treasures, the mosaic work reminds us that it takes many different and little pieces coming together to create a beautiful picture of impact—a sentiment we carry on the tail of World Ocean Day earlier this month.

Not only was it testament to the beauty of collective action, it was also a wonderful opportunity for members of the neurodivergent community to share their talents with the public.
