Overnight and in a matter of hours, a community changed a life. Grace Bhebhe is now set to regain her sight.

Gauteng, South Africa (12 March 2025) — A community came together by way of incredible kindness and changed the life of Grace Bhebhe in a matter of mere hours.

Grace is 35 years old and a diabetic who suffered a stroke last year. This left the left side of her body paralysed. On top of this feat that she is working hard to come back from, Grace is also losing her sight on account of terrible cataracts that she doesn’t have the medical aid to treat.

As her doctor, Dr Katie Rafferty explains, Grace has a “guardian angel” husband named Mike who works with the Salvation Army and supports Grace. However, despite the support and Grace’s fighting spirit, the degradation of her sight has become no small setback.

“Without her vision Grace’s rehabilitation process is jeopardised,” shares her doctor who also runs the Eyewish Foundation, an NPO gives cases like Grace’s the opportunity to get the help they need.

Dr Katie and her anaesthetist would take on the bilateral surgery at no cost. However, the hospital costs are to the tune of R27,000.

Dr Katie is a part of the DAILY J community—a wellness community founded by Johno Meintjes and his wife, Juls. Knowing how tight-knit the community are, the kind doctor got in touch to see if DAILY J might be able to spread the word and raise the funds for Grace. And boy, did they.

In a remarkable testament to the power of intentionality, DAILY J took on the challenge and managed to raise the funds in record time, surpassing the target at that!

“We went live into our Facebook group last night and raised the money in 2 hours to give Grace her eyesight back and change her life forever. This community works so hard to become better versions of themselves to help others,” Johno tells Good Things Guy.

All in all, R30,299 was raised for Grace!

As for her rehabilitation, it’ll become all the more possible with her vision restored.
