Displaced

Over 500 residents of Orient Hills lost their homes when a tornado blew through the informal settlement and displaced everyone. An NPO is helping fix it.

‘Play with a Purpose Educational Trust trading as Preschools 4 Africa’ is an NPO that has been working in the Orient Informal Settlement for a while and knows many of the community members.

On the 9th of October, a massive storm hit South Africa and with it came giant hail, strong winds and heavy rains. Another scary weather occurrence was a massive tornado that ripped many parts of South Africa from the ground. One of the places that were ripped apart by the tornado was Orient Hills.

Over 500 people including the Orient Hills preschool staff and children attending the school have either partially or completely lost their homes. The disaster flattened the entire community in a few minutes.

The NPO has decided to help restore the community by setting up a disaster relief fund. The fund will be used to rebuild the homes that have been lost, rebuild the schools and restock them.

Play with a Purpose Educational Trust trading as Preschools 4 Africa walked through Orient Hills yesterday and it was heartbreaking to see so many without hope as they don’t even have transport to go to a hardware store let alone the funds to rebuild.

Our aim is to try and help as many as possible to rebuild before the next rain storm!

The NPO needs more than just money from donors, they are desperate for tools and supplies for the rebuild. You can see a full list of everything needed for the rebuild or where to make donations. The NPO has listed all their information below.
