A bedridden Gogo asked her nurses if she could do something with her spare time while stuck in traction so the nurses got her wool and she knitted blankets.
The clinical team at Zithulele Hospital in the Eastern Cape share very sweet stories on their Facebook page. We have already shared the story about Ayanda the hero nurse that saved a woman from drowning in her car. And now we have a lovely story about a generous Gogo that wanted to do good while she was stuck in bed.
The wonderful Gogo, who’s name has been kept private, was in a hospital bed on traction. In orthopedic medicine, traction refers to the set of mechanisms for straightening broken bones or relieving pressure on the spine and skeletal system.
It is generally a long process and requires a lot of lying around doing nothing. Gogo decided she could use this free time to give back to the hospital. The staff in the Orthopedic ward helped her by collecting wool. She spent her time knitting blankets for the children in the Paediatric ward.
“Time and again we are reminded that the reason we do what we do is the amazing people we serve as our patients. This wonderful granny wanted something productive to do while she sat in bed on traction, so the OTs arranged her some wool and knitting needles. Not in it for herself, she wanted the blankets to go to paeds ward. Isn’t that great?”
Zithulele Hospital shared a lovely photo of Gogo holding her work up in pride. They also shared a sweet photo of one of the children sleeping under the blanket. We love this story, just one selfless act can change a life.
