Gogos from Westlake are getting ahead of Valentine’s Day by sharing in the love of learning new things. Armed with crochet hooks, tea and heart-shaped cookies, they made little hearts in anticipation of the day of love.
Westlake, South Africa (23 January 2025) — The Senior Santa Shoebox Project is all about gifting simple joys to seniors in the Western Cape. Typically, these joys look like shoeboxes packed with essential goodies and treats, usually accompanied by a party or lunch for the older folks to enjoy.
However, there’s also something to be said about the gifts that don’t always come wrapped. Whether it’s a new set of skills or time spent creating with guidance, the Senior Santa Shoebox also makes sure that elderly citizens get to enjoy the gift of time well spent. This is what a crew of gogos from Westlake were recently treated to, thanks to a crochet session in which hearts were all the rage.
Part of the Hilltoppers Seniors Club Westlake, the gogos got to relish in a day of crochet, tea, heart-shaped cookies and time spent together. For many, it was their first time reading patterns—a new skill that can go a very long way, as any friend of crafts will know.

Armed with crochet hooks, the gogos took a crack at making puffy red hearts in anticipation of Valentine’s Day.
With guidance and patience present thanks to Lynn Elliott Doubell and Joan Sharpe, the crafters are off to a fabulous start to their heart collections. It is not just a handmade gift for the big day of love; the hearts are also somewhat symbolic of the Senior Santa Shoebox project’s mission to bring a little more love into the lives of the elderly.
