Lavender Hills is enjoying a new world-class facility that boasts sports fields as well as tennis and netball courts—resources that are helping future sports stars and community members of all ages exercise wholesome passions!

Lavender Hills, South Africa (17 September 2024) — Lavender Hills is enjoying a new community facility that hopes to give future sports stars the chance to flex their muscles as well as affording other members of the community across ages the all-important access recreational activities.

The shared facility is said to be of world-class status. It boasts an abundance of sporting spaces including football, softball and rugby fields as well as netball and tennis courts, an AstroTurf for hockey and even indoor centres for other activities.

“We believe that right here in Lavender Hill – and in communities across our province – there are winners. There are future Springboks and Bafana Bafana stars. We have developed these facilities, where we run sport and recreation programmes daily, to make sure that there are opportunities for identifying and developing young talents. But it is not only about finding future champions. All children must have the chance to play, create, compete, perform, and have fun doing healthy activities,” said the Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie.

For communities whose schools aren’t equipped with recreational infrastructure, shared facilities like this help even the playing field not just literally, but essentially.

“We acknowledge there is a need to address inequalities in infrastructure available for school sport and recreation. In addition to this shared facility in Lavender Hill, we are working with municipalities and other partners to develop shared facilities in Mitchells Plain, Malmesbury, George, Beaufort West, and Kraaifontein. Thank you to all the organisations and passionate people who are working with us to create more opportunities for young people in our province,” the Minister furthered.

In an effort to use the new recreational facility to connect more communities and help them enjoy healthy habits, schools, clubs and community groups from across the Metro South Education District have been all invited to make use of the facilities.
