Growing up where vulnerability was seen as weakness, Maurice Edelson buried the abuse he suffered as a child. Now, well into his 50s, he is confronting his past through a powerful solo bike ride from the United Kingdom to Cape Town to find healing and help those carrying heavy loads in silence, too.

Tordesillas, Spain (23 June 2025) – A father and businessman with a thriving new life abroad. For years, Maurice Edelson’s life was the picture of outward success. But behind the surface was something deeper, a quiet storm of unspoken trauma, personal mistakes, and emotional isolation that only he knew about.

Raised in rural South Africa, where pain was hidden, silence was strength, and vulnerability felt like weakness, Maurice learned to bury his pain of abuse as a child.

However, well into his adult years, when the life he’d built brick by brick started to unravel and fall apart, Maurice came to face his past, and that marked the beginning of something new: a 100,000km ‘Unspoken to Unbroken’ solo bike ride from the UK to Cape Town to find inner healing and be a voice for others suffering in silence.

“I’ve always been a builder. I chose business over university. I’ve built companies, teams, and a life from scratch—first in South Africa, then again when I moved to the UK for my children’s future.

“Now I’m building something deeper. A journey that goes far beyond business. Unspoken to Unbroken is my path forward—a 4-to-5-year ride around the world on a bicycle. Not just to see the world, but to meet it,” Maurice shares.

Since the beginning of June, Maurice has been cycling through cities and villages where he talks to strangers, students, clubs, and communities to have meaningful conversations and ask two particular questions: What do we carry in silence? And what happens when we finally speak?

Exploring the hidden weight of trauma

The cycling healing journey is Maurice’s way of speaking honestly about trauma, healing, forgiveness, and the hard lessons that come from facing
yourself.

“This journey is not about men or women. It’s not about race, or religion, or age. It’s about the shared human truth: we all carry something.”

His journey, documented on his Facebook page, YouTube channel and Unspoken to Unbroken blog, has already been well-received by his supporters and the public who have supported Maurice with donations, kind messages, and equipment to make his adventure smoother.

“I’m cycling across countries to listen, to learn, and to speak what was once unspoken. Along the way, I’ll be meeting people from all walks of life, exploring how different communities navigate mental health, emotional pain, and healing.

“And maybe—just maybe—if we talk about it, we don’t have to carry it alone anymore”
