In January alone, nearly 5,000 healthy snacks made up of fruits and veggies were distributed to kids in need. This ongoing effort came as a heartwarming response to the heartbreaking news that children had been getting ill and even dying from spaza shop snacks.
Johannesburg, South Africa (27 January 2025) — In a heartwarming response to the heartbreaking news that children had reportedly been getting terribly ill and even losing their lives from eating expired spaza shop snacks, Charity Begins With Me’s Stephan Ferreira has helped distribute nearly 5,000 healthy snacks of fresh fruit and veggies in the past month!
In early January, Stephan, the charity’s founder, expressed his growing concern surrounding the access children from impoverished communities have to healthy food. But Stephan didn’t just leave matters there; he also launched a plan of action to help.
Since Charity Begins With Me is already heavily involved with feeding children from informal settlements in Johannesburg, Stephan decided to up the ante in the best way.
Hoping to ensure that children from these communities would not find themselves at risk of health complications simply because they were hungry, Stephan shared his birthday plans for the year.
In honour of his 40th birthday, Stephan challenged his community to give him the best gift by helping him distribute 40,000 pieces of fruit and veggies. This is around 750 pieces a week.
Eager to rise to the challenge, people rallied their resources to make the mission possible. Thanks to the initiative and a lot of help, January now stands as an example of a doable task.
If this momentum can continue, the 40,000 healthy snacks goal can easily be achieved in far less time than a full year.
