Inspiring Young Man

Bongani Mvumvu’s life started out with a sad beginning, facing loss and poverty. However this is about what an inspiring young man he became and how his life changed.

When Bongani Mvumvu’s parents split up he was sent to live with his little sister and uncle. Tragically one night a drunk taxi ploughed through their shack killing his Aunt and baby cousin. After the tragedy Bongani and his sister moved to his mother.

While living with his mother Bongani became an industrious young boy. To feed his sister he removed the magnets from an old set of speakers. He used the magnets to collect dropped coins outside his local spazza shop. From this idea he was able to buy bread and milk to feed his little sister.

Sadly one night he arrived home to find himself abandoned. His mother had packed up and left with his sister. The next two years were tough, walking everyday trying to find them.

“This went on for 2 years, sadly no luck till one Easter weekend in 2002 when my life turned the right side up. It was the fairy tale Easter weekend.”

Bongani had wandered onto a pig farm where he normally scavenged for food and became friends with the farmers son.

“The owner of the pig farm Mr Geoffrey Mohr used to sometimes bring his son Grant down to the pigs and I used to play with him”

Easter weekend 2002 Bongani told the Mohr family his story of struggle and they immediately offered him a place to live.

“Linda started giving me lessons and found a school for me, an Afrikaans school, Groote Schuur primary school, where I attended school with my broken Afrikaans and no English”

Bongani took a big interest in rugby and throughout school he did well at it. He was given a sports scholarship to Rondebosch Boys High School.

“I played under 16 Craven Week, under 18 Craven Week, and under 19 Curry Cup. My rugby career ended because of a knee injury and I had no medical aid.”

Bongani never gave up, his future was too bright as a sportsman so he started vaulting with horses. When on the back of a horse it is clear that this inspiring young man believes the sky is the limit.

There is much more to come from this inspiring story, we will keep you updated as Bongani grows in his new passion.
